Warming up

The weather is warming up again, and we have not had much moisture lately.  The men are going to get anxious to get out in the field!  Quentin has been working on fertilizer "prescriptions".  He has been going over the soil test results and trying to figure out which recommendations make sense and which are not economical.  He is able to vary the rates across the field, too, which adds some complexity to writing prescriptions.  The great part is that he can get everything set up ahead of time on the computer while it is still cold and wet.  Once they get the tractor rolling, it is just a matter of getting the right fertilizer mix to the right field.

Milestone!

We hit another milestone at our house this week.  Sierra turned 4 years old!  She is a little bundle of energy and loves to farm with Dad and Grandpa.  Don't be fooled by the princess cake.  Her favorite gifts were a screw gun toolset and some wrenches!

Icy weather

Not much to report on the farm these days.  It has been cold and we are having some icy weather this week.  Quentin is staying in as much as he can stand it.  He gets a little stir crazy after awhile.  He is anxious to get out and start putting on some fertilizer, but there is more moisture in the forecast so I don't know when it will dry out enough.  The cows are burning through the hay, but other than keeping them fed, life is slow on the farm right now.  I guess I need to get my "hunny-do" list out so Quentin doesn't get too bored.  If nothing else, it will encourage him to get out of the house to hide from my lists!!

Staying busy

Along with feeding cows, Quentin has found a new project to keep him busy this week.  For those who weren't aware, Paul has a shop building which we had been using for a church the last 14 years or so.  Our new church building is done enough to begin holding services, so we now have a shop again! Quentin has been busy the last couple weeks working on getting it shop ready and still has quite a ways to go.  In the meantime, the kids and I think it makes a pretty good playhouse/skating rink!

Winter is here!

Whew, we've had a blast of arctic air!  Winter has arrived in full force.  Quentin had to feed cows early before church this morning.  It was pretty chilly.  Thankfully, we have tank heaters on the cows' water tanks, but he still needed to chip some ice off the tanks where the heat didn't reach.  He went out this afternoon to recheck everywhere and make sure they had plenty to drink.  I think we should consider a move (or extended vacation) to Texas!

Soggy!

Another 0.6" of rain last night.  It is pretty soggy out.  Quentin was afraid he'd get the tractor stuck just trying to hay the cows!  No field work any time soon...

Cold cows?

The cows get to play in some white stuff this morning!  It's actually a bit warmer today than the last couple days, but we have about an inch of new snow.
